General Description:
This position focuses on a limited area within the aquarium, at least until employee is fluent in the skills needed to maintain his or her primary area of focus. Responsibilities: be responsible for exhibit(s) area after appropriate training; fill out and maintain appropriate records; keep area/exhibits clean and well maintained; demonstrate computer skills necessary to do job; assist in planning in his or her area; answer guests' questions and help in educational programs; help to train and supervise volunteers and interns.
Requirements:
B.A. or B.S. in biology or related field with course work in zoology, aquatic biology and chemistry, or equivalent experience. Fifty hours of scuba experience, obtained under various conditions is preferred. If not dive-certified, must have the ability to obtain valid certification or additional certification within six months if requested by manager. Must pass a diving physical examination given by an authorized Shedd Aquarium doctor yearly, or before being employed as a senior aquarist/diver. Must be able to work and communicate well with fellow employees and the public. Previous animal husbandry experience preferred. Must have a valid driver's license and insurance, or be able to obtain such within 60 days of employment and be able to safely drive any company vehicle. This position may call for special scheduling or overtime needs throughout the week, often without advance notice. Must be able to work weekends and holidays as needed. Must have good hearing, visual acuity and verbal communication skills and be able to lift 50 pounds. Schedule: Temporary position through December 2009.
