General Description:
The assistant director of marketing–strategy and online media is responsible for marketing and brand strategy, with an emphasis on online marketing and new media. From identifying and prioritizing messages and audiences to recommending and rolling out new communications vehicles, this person will be a key member of the organization’s marketing department and of the brand and web teams. He or she will work with an integrated institutional team to develop and implement strong, effective marketing campaigns and to create and deliver new online and offline marketing initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Online marketing: Manages online marketing initiatives and serves as primary contact with online marketing consultants as necessary. Leads cross-departmental team meetings related to the online marketing projects. Drives decisions within the organization for prioritizing online projects based on consistency with other communication projects and impact on key metrics such as growth of the e-mail house file and fundraising. Acts in a consulting role with other departments to help them develop strategies and initiatives to achieve their goals online.
• Marketing strategy: Responsible for formulating and implementing integrated marketing strategies and plans. Takes a leadership role in setting creative direction in the department and brand team to plan and design for each year’s integrated campaign. Provides leadership to the marketing team and collaborates with other departments to integrate and execute marketing plans. Manages the marketing coordinator, editor/
content manager and new-media coordinator.
• Branding and brand consultation: Actively participates in Shedd’s branding efforts and serves as member of the brand development team. Masters all brand filters and champions the Shedd brand perspective on teams and in reviewing materials. Consults with other departments to infuse marketing and brand-related insight into their planning efforts.
• New technology initiatives: Identifies opportunities for new online projects that drive organizational objectives and continues to the keep website(s) and online communications as resources to constituents and portraying the values and quality level of the organization.
• Team participation: Serves as a department representative in aquarium, serving on appropriate teams as needed.
• Marketing intelligence: Champions marketing intelligence efforts and initiatives. Works closely with supervisor to develop and update departmental reports and communications (competitive spending and trends report, board reports, etc.) to help inform strategic marketing planning on an ongoing basis.
• Performs other duties as needed.
Job Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree and at least five to seven years of marketing experience. Online marketing experience required.
• Special knowledge and skills: Must have strong verbal and written communications skills. Should have an excellent understanding of marketing strategy and branding, digital and social media, and be able to think strategically and creatively. Must have strong background in HTML, CSS, Adobe Creative Suite and content-management systems, as well as project-management skills and a demonstrated ability to drive decisions related to marketing, branding and online. Must be able to work and produce in a team environment. Must have a guest focus and a commitment to excellence.
• Unusual physical requirements: Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
