Internship Title: Guest Engagement Internship
Internship Department: Guest Engagement

Objective: To develop, train and manage a team of interpretive corps in support of the Aquarium mission and goals. 

• Research and review current interpretation techniques to gain an understanding of volunteer/teen roles in engaging guests.

• Attend Foundational Training and other relevant trainings.

• Assist in creating and editing an Interpretation Guidelines document for volunteer/teen post assignments.

• Co-lead field trips to local natural areas.

Final Product(s): Create usable guidelines to be used for volunteer/teen training.  Lead a volunteer/teen training utilizing the developed guidelines.

A desirable candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills.  This intern should have the ability to adapt to a variety of audiences and have leadership qualities. Must be able to maintain an active schedule throughout the day and co-lead field experiences. A student pursuing a degree in education/ informal education; an interest in life science, conservation and the natural world preferred.

Minimum GPA: 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
Desired Year in School: Enrolled in an undergraduate program
Compensation: Unpaid. Interns must make arrangements with their schools to gain academic credit for this internship. Shedd Aquarium is happy to provide any work documentation necessary for this process.

Desired Majors: Education/ Informal Education, Museum Studies, Life Sciences, Public Communications, Urban and Regional Planning, Hospitality Management

Time Commitment:  Three to four day per week;  24 to 30 hours weekly. For training purposes, Wednesday available is preferred.
Learning Potential:  This intern will gain an understanding of Interpretation and how it is utilized in a cultural institution. This intern will develop confidence with public speaking to a variety of audiences. This intern will also learn the intricacies of managing a diverse volunteer and work-study force in an Aquarium environment.
