Application Deadline:

Winter/spring 2012 through summer 2012 (January–August): This internship has been filled.

Fall 2012 (August–December): Sept. 15, or until the internship is filled.  

Objective: Assist our Development department in functions pertaining to fundraising and donor stewardship.

Responsibilities:
• This intern will assist with multiple aspects of donor relations, special events and development activities including, but not limited to, major fundraising events, cocktail parties, dinners, meetings, tours and other donor-related activities.

• Assisting with planning fundraising events, both large scale (up to 900 people) and small scale (less than 50 people) at Shedd. An intern will work directly with the donor relations/special events program manager to ensure all details, from editing nametags, to organizing volunteers and finalizing event logistics, are covered.

• This intern will also assist in overseeing activities associated with the Auxiliary Board. In addition, the intern will help maintain Auxiliary Board information and activities.

• Interns usually take on one event as a focal point for their internship but they will work on many different projects throughout their time at Shedd.

Final product(s): An intern will gain valuable hands-on experience with development/event-planning field.
 
Qualifications:
A desirable candidate can multi-task, work well with teams and be able to work independently. This person must digest a lot of information quickly, be detail-oriented, think creatively, effectively manage his or her time, and meet deadlines. An ideal candidate will be a self-starter and will also have some experience/interest in special-event planning and management. This intern should be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, Word and Outlook. Professional work ethic and demeanor is imperative.

This person must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Some nighttime and weekend work will be required.

Minimum GPA: Minimum 3.0 on a 4 point scale.
 
Desired year in school: Junior or senior in an undergraduate program.
 
Compensation: This internship is unpaid. Interns must make arrangements with their schools to gain academic credit for this internship. Shedd Aquarium is happy to provide any work documentation necessary for this process.
 
Desired majors: Not-for-profit fundraising, communications, business, or related field.

Time commitment: Three to five days a week; 15 to 30 hours weekly (set schedule will be determined based on intern availability). Internship will last from mid-February until mid-August. It includes some night and weekend events.

Learning potential: This internship provides an excellent opportunity to learn about event planning, fundraising and donor cultivation. It is anticipated that this intern will learn how to execute donor-related communications and activities and also gain an understanding of museum-based fundraising in the Chicago philanthropic community. This intern will also learn about the aquarium's programs along with Shedd’s fundraising practices. The long-term timeline for this internship will provide an opportunity for the intern to gain a broad perspective of event planning as he or she will be able to participate throughout the entire planning process.
