Department: Great Lakes and Sustainability
Responsible for the development, delivery and management of the Great Lakes and Sustainability (GLS) strategic plan as it relates to resource and staff management, grant obligations and programmatic goals. Represents GLS programs to external and internal audiences. The person must excel at organizational, management and planning skills, oral and written communication, critical thinking and creativity, and be able to working collaboratively with others to develop and achieve shared goals.
• Work closely with the GLS vice president to develop, manage and execute implementation of the GLS strategic plan including meeting all programmatic goals, budget management and evaluation. Guide fundraising efforts including funder/donor relations, grant fulfillment and reporting.
• Maintain strong relationships with local, national and international Great Lakes organizations/influencers, including government officials, NGOs, funders, associations. Develop new and nurture existing internal and external partnerships to advance the programmatic goals.
• Develop content and work closely with Public Relations and Marketing departments to promote Great Lakes program with mainstream and social media.
• Represent Shedd’s GLS programs for internal and external audiences, with an emphasis on the Great Lakes program. Identify and develop opportunities for strategic growth and program direction. Represent department on strategic teams, various projects and programs.
• Maintain and build expertise in GLS issue content. Serve as reliable, knowledgeable source of current, relevant departmental information and provide content and input for Shedd messaging needs. Serve as Shedd spokesperson for media and other public appearances. Provide counsel to VP and EVP.
• Manage staff members, interns and volunteers including training, performance evaluation, professional development and brand representation.
• Assist with other projects as required, including aquarium-wide teams.
• Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred in policy, not-for-profit management, science, conservation, or related field.
• Minimum five years of planning, program development and delivery. Minimum five years acting in a management role, including budget responsibility.
• Excellent communication skills, including writing and public speaking. Experience working in the Great Lakes conservation or policy community. Experience with project management (initiation through completion), budget management, grant management, team leadership and strategic planning. Demonstrated interest in sustainability issues and awareness of current local, national and international conservation issues. Ability to effectively communicate environmental issues to the general public and specialty audiences.
• Excellent leadership qualities, self-starter, detailed-oriented and organizational skills. Diplomacy, sense of humor and positive attitude required.
• Must be able to work flexible hours including early mornings, nights and weekends as necessary. Must be able to walk/stand for extended periods of time. Position requires consumption of seafood and shellfish. Must have a valid driver’s license and willingness to travel frequently. Must be able to do moderate lifting.
