Internship Title: Sustainable practices internship
 
Internship Department: Great Lakes and Sustainability (GLS) within External Affairs and Communications (EAC)

Objective: Assist in aquarium’s sustainable practices projects and research (emphasis on purchasing, environmental quality and facilities)

Responsibilities:
• Assist Purchasing and Environmental Quality departments with various projects, including: 
   • Vendor survey generation, distribution, collection and evaluation
   • Investigation of sustainable products and alternative chemicals
   • Assist with other possible projects as available

• Assist Sustainability department with internal and external communications
   • Generate sustainability-related blogs and social media posts
   • Support “awareness” portion of Shedd's 2013–2018 Sustainability Strategic Plan

• Produce background research on sustainable practices current events/news
   • Update GLS team regularly

Final Product(s): The candidate will gain a solid base in the world of sustainable practices to better understand the needs of a zoo/aquarium not-for-profit organization. The candidate will be exposed to various aquarium-wide sustainability issues concerning sustainable purchasing, environmental quality and facilities.

Qualifications: A desirable candidate must be able to multi-task, have excellent organizational skills, have the ability to work independently, be energetic and eager to learn. The ideal candidate must have good research and writing skills. A candidate must also think critically, creatively, be a self-starter and have a passion for conservation awareness. Interest and knowledge in sustainable practices a plus.

Minimum GPA: 3.0 on a 4-point scale
 
Desired Year in School: Junior or senior in college, or recent graduate.
 
Compensation: Unpaid. Interns must make arrangements with their schools to gain academic credit for this internship. Shedd Aquarium is happy to provide any work documentation necessary for this process.
 
Desired Majors: sSciences (biology, zoology, chemistry, geology, geography, botany, microbiology, wildlife management, environmental science, sustainability, physics, agriculture, earth sciences, related fields) and/or communications (English, journalism, communications, public relations, creative writing, etc.) and/or social sciences (anthropology, global studies, history, philosophy, psychology, sociology, languages, etc.) and/or business (economics, marketing, finance, business administration, accounting, related fields).

Time Commitment: 15 to 25 hours a week, Fridays and some weekends preferred. For training purposes, Wednesday availability is preferred.
 
Learning Potential: Exposure to a variety of sustainable practices activities, including, but not limited to, research projects, internal awareness campaigns, purchasing, environmental quality and facilities.

Connections to other Shedd staff members and interns through formal and informal trainings as well as mentorship opportunities.
