Teen Learning Lab Mission Designer Internship

The Teen Learning Lab intern will gain exposure to innovative efforts in informal science education while working closely with the Teen Learning Lab staff to assist in curriculum design and assist with special projects. This intern will learn about incorporating technology into curriculum design, curriculum design in informal educational settings, game-based learning, and other informal learning practices that are unique to Shedd. Over the course of this internship, interns will complete some or all of the following activities with the support of Teen Learning Lab staff:

  • Lead a workshop previously designed by Teen Learning Lab staff with teens in the lab.
  • Hold a focus group with a selection of teens to cultivate ideas for challenges/lessons/workshops.
  • Design 3 or more workshops, activities, challenges or self-directed activities based on topics connected to teen interests.
  • Implement this workshop during a Teen Learning Lab open session.
  • Cultivate feedback on the workshop from teen participants.
  • Submit a reflection on teen learning outcomes achieved through this workshop.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate commitment to Shedd’s vision, mission and values.
  • Collaborate with teens from the Teen Learning Lab to develop lessons, missions, activities, or workshops for teen audiences.
  • Connect lessons, missions, or activities to desired Learning Outcomes.
  • With the assistance of Teen Learning Lab staff, implement activities in the informal learning space within the lab.
  • Make connections with teen audience while facilitating activities to help foster their growth across Shedd Learning Outcomes.
  • Make an effort to continually support teen voice, teen project design, and teen directed research.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Currently attending college or a recent graduate, studying secondary education, science education, educational technology or related majors.
  • Previous teaching experience in either a formal or informal environment helpful, but not required.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects, strong communication skills, outgoing and friendly personality.
  • Must maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficiency with a variety of technologies including Mac computers, digital photography and editing, video conferencing, graphic design, or related technical skills preferred. Outlook experience preferred.

Desired year in school: Currently enrolled college level Junior/Senior/Recent Graduate

Desired Majors: Secondary Education, Science Education, Educational Technology

Time Commitment: Must be able to work evening and some weekend hours. Schedule can be flexible, and be scheduled according to the candidate availability. 15-30 hours weekly. Looking for a 3 or 4 month commitment.
