CHICAGO – Shedd Aquarium, a global leader in animal care, conservation and learning, is pleased to announce that Joy Kubarek-Sandor, former Director of Learning Planning and Evaluation, has been promoted to Vice President of Learning. With more than 10 years of experience teaching and managing environmental and science education programs both in the formal classroom and in informal settings, Kubarek-Sandor strengthens the aquarium’s established learning expertise, overseeing Shedd’s Learning Group, a team providing a range of learning experiences onsite, offsite and online with the goal of enhancing learner’s scientific literacy, environmental literacy, and 21st century learning skills.
Originally hired at Shedd as Coordinator of Teacher Programs in 2006, Kubarek-Sandor was quickly promoted to Manager of Student & Teacher Programs, and most recently served as Director of Learning Planning & Evaluation. Kubarek-Sandor has previously worked at the Great Lakes Aquarium, Minnesota Sea Grant, and the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board. She serves as an adjunct faculty member with National Louis University and Northeastern Illinois University and assists with research at the Illinois Institute of Technology. In addition to her local experience, Kubarek-Sandor has spent extensive periods of time teaching abroad, including teaching high school students in Poland problem-based math and science through a grant from the European Union.
Kubarek-Sandor is active in the professional community and serves on the Museum Education Roundtable Board of Directors. She holds a Master of Education with a focus on environmental education from the University of Minnesota Duluth and will complete her Ph.D. in science education at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 2014. Kubarek-Sandor replaces Melissa Williams, who has been named Executive Director of the Feiro Marine Life Center, an educational and scientific organization promoting marine education and conservation located in Port Angeles, Wash.
