Vice President, Planning and Design
With more than 15 years of exhibit and planning experience, Tynnetta Qaiyim works to deliver unique and inspirational experiences to Shedd Aquarium’s audiences as vice president of planning and design. In her role, Qaiyim oversees several areas at Shedd including the aquarium’s experience design, visual communications, media, gardens and aquatic show team, and she co-leads Shedd’s in-house advertising agency.
Qaiyim began her career at Shedd in 1997, providing support for the Facility Master Plan. Since then she has accrued a wealth of expertise creating new world-class experiences for aquarium guests. Under her leadership, her department has delivered several high-profile projects that connect Shedd’s visitors to the living world, including the renovation of the Abbott Oceanarium and creation of Polar Play Zone. She supervised planning and construction of Jellies, Shedd’s popular special exhibit.
She also directed the creation and launch of Shedd's first outdoor exhibit, Stingray Touch, and supervised the creation of memorable experiences around the building including Wild Reef, the refresh of Amazon Rising, At Home on the Great Lakes and Shedd’s aquatic shows.
Before coming to Shedd, Qaiyim served for 14 years in the United States Marine Corps, traveling around the world and attaining the rank of gunnery sergeant. She studied urban planning at the University of Illinois, Chicago, and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts from Chicago State University. She is a member of the American Alliance of Museums.
