What Shedd is Doing

So what is Shedd Aquarium doing about seafood? We are spreading the word. And practicing what we preach.

We promote the importance of sustainable seafood in our education programs, exhibits and special events… even in the food choices we make for the animals in our care. You can be sure that we serve only sustainable seafood in our own restaurants, Soundings and the Bubble Net. And we have enlisted many restaurants across Chicago to join our effort. We’ve also developed the Right Bite program to educate consumers, restaurant owners and seafood purveyors about the importance of choosing sustainable seafood. We’ve reached millions of people through media events, chef presentations and family programs.

DID YOU KNOW?
Shedd’s five sea otters gobble 12,000 pounds of shrimp every year! Shrimp trawling causes huge amounts of bycatch, and shrimp farming can be devastating to coastal ecosystems. Shedd purchases its shrimp from Desert Sweet Shrimp, a small sustainable farm in Arizona. Desert Sweet keeps our otters well fed and helps us prevent more than 100,000 pounds of sealife from being caught in shrimp trawl nets every year!
