Detour JazFunk
June 27, July 18, August 29
Detour JazFunk is the sound of Chicago’s new urban jazz scene. Its music is built on a foundation of old school R&B’s soulful and funky grooves blended with the melodic improvisations of classic and contemporary jazz. Detour JazFunk includes guitarist Phil Seed, drummer Ben “Jammin’ ” Johnson, electric bassist Kenery Kent Smith and keyboard wizard Tim Gant.
Rio Bamba
July 4, September 5
The Rio Bamba sound is a unique blend of bossa nova, samba and American and Latin jazz, played by world-class musicians. The group moves easily from classic and swinging jazz, vocal or instrumental, to Brazilian samba that brings everyone to the dance floor with its irresistible rhythms. Maggie Vagle, Joel Martinez, Craig Linenberger and John Garvey make up the Rio Bamba sound.
Chris Greene Quartet
July 11
In much the way that classical composers have used native folk elements as the basis for their art, the Chris Greene Quartet uses familiar modern materials—the funk and hip-hop Chris heard growing up—as a bridge between jazz and other genres. It’s that ability to retain that tradition, expanding it at the same time, that makes the CGQ something different on the modern jazz scene.
Bill Boris
July 25
The Bill Boris Group combines elements of straight-ahead jazz, funk and R&B. The group performs original compositions along with jazz standards. Bill has played with Charles Earland, David “Fathead” Newman, Arthur Prysock, Eric Alexander and Tony Monaco. He’s performed at the Barbados Jazz Festival, the Kaunas Jazz Festival (Lithuania), Szczecin Jazz Festival (Poland) and South Shore Jazz Festival.
Agnieszka Iwanska
August 1
Agnieszka Iwanska is an accomplished and gifted vocalist and songwriter praised by the Chicago Tribune’s Howard Reich as a “voice of promise.” Her first CD got excellent reviews and airplay on 110 radio stations, coming in at number 38 on the Top 50 national chart. Agnieszka has sung the National Anthem at Wrigley Field, and performed at festivals in Naperville and Milwaukee.
BlueHour
August 8
This Chicago-based instrumental trio—featuring Rob Denty on saxophone, Scott Stevenson on keyboards/organ and Tim Mulvenna on drums—has a very eclectic musical vision. At the same time that BlueHour is steeped in the Chicago blues tradition, the group’s members pride themselves on the numerous influences that tinge their music, from Louis Armstrong to Led Zeppelin, creating sounds to be enjoyed by all.
Petra Van Nuis
August 15
Petra has performed at such prominent venues as the Chicago Cultural Center, the Green Mill, Pops for Champagne, the Pump Room, Katerina’s, and Andy’s Jazz Club. Inspired by such jazz vocal greats as Peggy Lee, Billie Holiday and Julie London, Petra opts for a straightforward swinging delivery with an emphasis on feeling.
Peacetet
August 22
