Kids and Seafood
“Eeeeeeeewwwwwwwwww…. I don’t like fish!” Is this the reaction you would expect from your kids if they learned that tonight’s menu featured a hearty, healthy seafood dish? Yes? Well, Moms and Dads, never fear… Shedd is here!
We understand how tricky it can be to introduce seafood into your family’s diet. Seafood is a healthy choice for your family, and the right seafood is a healthy choice for our waters. The good news is that there are lots of fun, delicious and easy ways to bring the right seafood to your table.
We recommend trying mild-tasting seafood in kid-friendly recipes, like baking strips of U.S.-farmed catfish as an alternative to ground beef or chicken in a fun “taco bar.” Substitute canned wild Alaska salmon for your favorite tuna-salad sandwich recipe. Bread and bake U.S.-farmed tilapia or Alaska pollock to make yummy, homemade fish sticks. Short on time? Check the label of your favorite fish stick brand. Surprise! It might just be Alaska pollock — a kid-friendly and planet-friendly choice — under that crispy coating!

Rachel, Shedd Aquarium’s director of conservation awareness, and her daughter, Molly, have made the easy and delicious switch from orange roughy, a long-time family favorite and Right Bite-listed “Avoid” fish, to tilapia, an even tastier and ocean-friendly alternative.
