Intern will assist with both the daily tasks, such as routing periodicals to staff and completing interlibrary loan requests, as well as assisting with the development of the Shedd organizational archive, answering staff research questions, and locating internet resources for our staff intranet. Library interns will have the opportunity to learn a variety of library functions, such as cataloging, preservation of library materials, organization of an archive, collection development, internal marketing, and circulation, as well as some of the fascinating history of the Shedd Aquarium.
Ideal library intern candidates should be undergraduate students or higher with previous work experience. Candidates should be detail-orientated, organized and able to work independently for extended periods of time. Experience working with and/or creating databases is a plus.
Note: A more advanced internship may be developed as a practicum for a library school student looking for additional studies in archival work or database construction. UIUC has a practicum option as well as many Chicago-area students in UIUC’s distance-learning graduate school (LEEP): http://www.lis.uiuc.edu/courses/practicum/. This is an unpaid internship.
