What Shedd Is Doing

Right now and every day. Near and far. On our own and with others. This is Shedd’s conservation charge.

As a steward of the natural world, we take our responsibilities very seriously. We are determined, and we are passionate. We are scientists and advocates. But most of all we are communicators, creating awareness programs that inform and inspire our guests, our staff, our city and our global community.

DID YOU KNOW?
Shedd Aquarium was the first cultural institution — and only the third building of any kind — in Chicago with a soy-based roof. Made from the equivalent of 36 acres of soybeans, the reflective white coating stays cool in the summer, lowering the aquarium’s air-conditioning bills while countering the urban heat island effect created by black asphalt roofs.
