Build your volunteer path around your schedule! If you have changing availability, this is a great way to get involved and make a difference. Special Event volunteers sign up for shifts that match their availability.

Opportunities to help may include:

  • Evening events: Jazzin’ at the Shedd, fundraisers, exhibit previews
  • Learning events: Shedd Stewards, summer camp, overnights
  • Conservation events: Great Lakes Action Days
  • Desk Set Roles: Data entry, “Thank You” calls for new members, mail room

Volunteer tasks will vary by event, but may include greeting, registration, way-finding, assisting with activities, administrative tasks, and more.

Days and times vary by event, and may be on weekdays or weekends. Most shifts fall between 4 and 8 hours.

Volunteers must exceed 40 hours of service per year, and be able to serve at least once every three months. Ages 18+ only.

Note: volunteers do not help with private events such as party/corporate rentals.

Horticulture

Foster your green thumb and help Shedd’s sustainability efforts! We are surrounded by gardens designed for our growing conditions, and volunteers help keep them looking great. Seasonal help is needed from late Spring to early Fall with garden maintenance tasks including planting, weeding, watering, harvesting. Hours are flexible between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Volunteers should be prepared to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Ages 18+ only.
