We are the Great Lakes

As a citizen of the Great Lakes basin, you’re among 40 million people in the United States and Canada who depend on the Great Lakes for food, home, livelihood, recreation and that most basic need, clean drinking water. More than 3,500 plant and animal species—some found nowhere else on the planet—also call the Great Lakes home.

Together these five lakes are a priceless natural resource, holding 20 percent of the world’s surface fresh water. Shedd Aquarium is committed to protecting the Great Lakes for the people and wildlife that rely on them.
