Shedd Aquarium's Internship Program aims to provide meaningful career exploration for those that have completed high school and are seeking professions in non-profits, animal care, conservation, research, and related fields.

Internship Opportunities at Shedd Aquarium
From Animal Care to Marketing, Conservation Research to Public Relations, internships are offered in a variety of professions. Opportunities vary from season to season.
We welcome applications from all levels of experience, including those seeking career exploration or changes, gap year students, and all collegiate levels. Applicants must have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED, and be at least age 18.
Interns are responsible for securing their own housing accommodations and transport. Shedd Aquarium is accessible via public transit.

Veterinary Internship Opportunities at Shedd
For those pursuing careers in the veterinary field, Shedd Aquarium offers two focused opportunities. Both offer interns the chance to learn and participate in the day-to-day workings of an aquarium animal hospital, which provides care for a large collection of fishes, marine and terrestrial mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and invertebrates.

Interns are responsible for securing their own housing accommodations and transport. Shedd Aquarium is accessible via public transit. Veterinary opportunities are unpaid.
Veterinary Technician Externship
Applicants must be in their second year or, or have graduated from, an accredited Veterinary Technician program. A minimum of four weeks of availability is required. Technician Externs are generally scheduled Monday-Friday from 7am-3pm.
Internships may not be offered in all seasons.

Veterinary Externship
Enrollment in a Veterinary Medicine program is required. Applicants should apply 1 year prior to their clinical year (third year for most).
Selected externs will be scheduled for one 4-week block during the next academic year. Shorter or longer blocks may be approved on a case-by-case basis.

Please note that the Veterinary Externship and Veterinary Technician Internship each have specific education requirements. See the descriptions for more detail.

Shedd Aquarium provides both paid and unpaid internships, as well as offers placements for interns from partner organizations and schools that offer funding. If interns are eligible for funding from outside sources, we are happy to help them with any documentation or requirements needed.

Internships are not a guarantee of employment. Interns are welcome to apply for positions, however, if they meet the requirements. We do have many staff members who started as volunteers or interns.
