Right Bite programToday is World Oceans Day, a global day to celebrate the oceans and all of the amazing ways that we’re connected to them. At Shedd, we celebrate marine life every day—like the beautiful, mysterious jellies. Today is also a great opportunity to think about what we can do together to make sure that our kids, and their kids, and their kids, can celebrate healthy oceans when they grow up.

Healthy oceans depend on having enough of all the animals and plants that live in them. Many species, however, are under a lot of pressure: There are five major issues associated with commercial fishing, and what it all comes down to is that we’re putting too much strain on the world’s fish populations. When we don’t have enough fish in the oceans, all of the fishing businesses and the communities and regions that rely on them are impacted—not to mention everyone who enjoys eating fish!

That’s why today, for World Oceans Day, we’re asking you to become part of a community that’s working for sustainable seafood. Choosing sustainable seafood – fish that are abundant, well-managed, and caught or farmed in environmentally friendly ways – is one of the easiest, and most delicious, actions we can take to protect the health of our waters worldwide. By using the Right Bite card when you eat out or buy seafood for dinner, you can join others who support sustainable fisheries—and you’ll help your friends and family make responsible seafood choices, too.
