Gabriel Nieves focuses on accelerating and advancing critical human-centric endeavors for Shedd Aquarium like staff training and professional development, talent acquisition, and benefits management for more than 400 aquarium staff. A member of the executive leadership team, he also helps to foster a welcoming, respectful and caring workplace through robust and intentional staff culture investments and employee engagement initiatives that are both energetic and empowering.
Nieves oversees a talented and driven Human Resources team that delivers human-centered approaches and programming to Shedd staff as well as an incredibly passionate community of aquarium volunteers, who contribute vital services to Shedd’s mission and operations.
Nieves is also a champion of Shedd’s decades-long DEAI initiatives. He works to elevate and operationalize commitments to marginalized voices and perspectives, ensuring Shedd’s DEAI values are woven into the way the aquarium delivers its mission every day.
Before joining Shedd, Nieves held a leadership position at PAWS Chicago and previously also supported HR efforts across the hospitality industry. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from DePaul University as well as certifications from the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) and the Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI).
