What it’s like to be a marine biologist? Join us for Teen Science Expedition: The Bahamas to find out! You’ll get firsthand experience exploring the coral reefs of the Bahamas using scientific techniques to learn about the animals and their habitats. Working from Shedd’s research vessel, you’ll experience life as a marine science researcher, immersing yourself in discoveries by conducting research and learning about important Bahamian ecological challenges. Whether you are a marine science enthusiast or just curious about animals and nature, this will be an unforgettable experience!

Age and Requirements

Participants must be enrolled in grades 9-12 at the time of registration.

Participants must possess strong swimming skills.

Participants must have a U.S. passport with an expiration date more than 6 months after the trip departure date.

Participants must have a signed doctor’s note approving the trip’s activities.

 

Program Dates

Orientation: June 22, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Shedd Aquarium.
Legal guardians are asked to attend from 9 a.m. to noon.

Trip 1: July 6-13, flight times TBD
Trip 2: July 15-22, flight times TBD

There is currently a waitlist for Trip 1. If you would like to be added to the waitlist for this trip, please complete registration and we will contact you about your status.

Participants fly in and out of Miami International Airport.

Program cost

$4,200 for members
$4,500 for nonmembers

Payment is due in full within two weeks of receiving your order information or your spot will be released.

Included

• Housing for 8 days and 7 nights on the R/V Coral Reef II
• Chef-prepared meals and snacks each day
• Guided snorkels with Shedd Aquarium’s experienced instructors
• Visit to Bimini Biological Field Station (also known as Bimini Sharklab)
• Meeting with scientists from the Dolphin Communication Project
• Travel costs between Miami International Airport and R/V Coral Reef II
• Snorkel, mask, flippers and personal flotation device
• Travel costs to and from snorkel practice on the day of orientation

• Swimming and snorkeling
• Hiking over uneven terrain
