Shedd’s Commitment

Shedd Aquarium is proud to host Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea, with its powerful message that single-use plastic trash is one of the ocean’s deadliest predators.

Plastic reduction is nothing new to Shedd. Over the years, the amount of plastic we recycle has dropped—by 70 percent since 2013—because we’ve eliminated it wherever possible in our operations. Read about our recycling and other sustainability successes.

Shedd is also one of the founding members of the new Aquarium Conservation Partnership, a first-of-its-kind collaboration among 19 U.S. aquariums to promote ocean and freshwater conservation by reducing single-use plastic pollution.

It’s a big task: Every year, 8.8 million tons more plastic pollution winds up in our oceans. But the ACP organizations are optimistic that by informing and enlisting our combined guests and members, we can significantly reduce the presence of the “art materials” represented in Washed Ashore, and that will save the sea.

We have the power to stem the tide of ocean trash embodied in Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea and protect the aquatic animals we love. See how you can help!
