Who can attend

This program is designed for members of Scouts BSA in grades 6-12; however, non-Scouts are welcome to participate!

Adults are invited to observe parts of the program. Participants may also be dropped off. While adults are welcome to attend, it is in an observational capacity only. Due to capacity limitations in certain spaces, adults may not be able to observe some sections of the workshop.


Please complete the following requirements as listed in the BSA Merit Badge Book. Please bring all work related to these prerequisites to the workshop day. Shedd educators, who are also BSA approved merit badge counselors, will be on hand to sign blue cards.

#2: Define salinity, temperature, and density
#3: All parts
#5: Explain how differences in evaporation and precipitation affect the salt content of the oceans.
#6: Define benthos, nekton, and plankton. Name some of the plants and animals that make up each of these groups.

Drop-off and pick-up

Drop-off takes place from 11:30 a.m.-noon. Pick-up takes place from 5-5:30 p.m.

What do adults do during the program? 

Adults have several options for participating in this program!

If you wish to drop off your scout and pick them up after the program, you may do so without purchasing an adult ticket.

If you would like to observe the program, you may do so by purchasing an adult ticket as an add-on to this order. You will be prompted to do so as you make payment. To add more than one adult to your order, please call 312-939-2438 after your purchase.

If you would like to explore the aquarium while your scout is earning their merit badge, you can purchase aquarium admission for yourself and others in your party. You can purchase tickets online (recommended) or you can purchase tickets in person once you arrive at the aquarium.


Program includes

  • Use of stairs; elevators are available
  • Moving around the aquarium for up to 1 hour
  • Moving around the aquarium, which has varying light, noise and temperature levels
