Take Action for Animals this Earth Day with Shedd Aquarium

Five Ways to Protect Aquatic Animals and Their Habitats at Shedd, In Community and Around the Globe

April 14, 2022

Tiny silver fishes swarm around and through corals.

Shedd Aquarium is sharing five ways to take action for animals this Earth Day and beyond to support a healthy blue planet. As an organization dedicated to the care and welfare of thousands of animals, Shedd is invested in inspiring the public to get involved and protect aquatic life. Whether it’s sparking compassion for animals at Shedd, cleaning up local habitats in community or joining a global network to further educate and inform actions, there’s ways for everyone to support Earth Day every day.

At Shedd

Attend a Teen Workshop at the aquarium: Hear first-hand about Shedd’s commitment to take action for animals and what you can do for the natural world. Learn about the various programs at Shedd that help make us greener, including a conservation department, on-site gardens where we grow food and native species and much more. These workshops are free, teens can just register in advance for either date: Saturday, April 23 from 1-3 p.m. or Thursday, April 28 from 5-7 p.m.

Plan a visit to the aquarium: Explore the world’s oceans, lakes, rivers and reefs in the heart of Chicago. As guests come face-to-face with incredible aquatic animals, our hope is they become inspired to make a difference for the blue planet. Further, tickets support Shedd’s efforts to care for the animals that call the aquarium home and its work in wild aquatic ecosystems as well.

In Community

Raise Your Voice: In one simple click, the public can contact their elected representatives to ask them to reduce plastic pollution in the national parks. By reducing the amount of single-use plastic items sold and distributed in these treasured natural spaces, it can protect wildlife, keep parks clean and pristine, and protect these spaces for generations to come. Sign the petition here, and share your support on social media using #PlasticFreeParks.

Restore Local Habitats: Volunteer for a Shedd Aquarium Action Day to restore and protect nearby beaches, waterways and forest preserves to support local wildlife and take collective action. There are a variety of locations, dates and times to get involved!
