Frank Oliaro
Laboratory Manager, Molecular Ecology and Conservation Labs
Education
M.S., Conservation Biology, San Francisco State University
B.S., Biology, University of New Mexico
Expertise
Molecular biology, clinical pathology, conservation biology
An expert in molecular biology, Frank Oliaro plays a central role in advancing Shedd Aquarium’s molecular research and diagnostic capabilities. He leads core molecular biology work, including DNA extraction and sequencing, and oversees training for department staff in molecular laboratory techniques and safety. Oliaro was a key collaborator in establishment of the Aquarium Microbiome Project, expanding Shedd’s in-house diagnostics to include advanced molecular and DNA-based technologies, and strengthening the institution’s capacity for research and animal health care. He also ensures the Molecular=Ecology and Conservation Labs operate at the highest standards through rigorous quality control, troubleshooting and routine maintenance.
Oliaro began his career at Shedd in 2013 as a laboratory medical technologist, supporting veterinary and technical teams across clinical diagnostics, including necropsy, clinical pathology and microbiology. His broader research experience spans both field and laboratory work, including original studies characterizing diets of free-ranging animals using molecular techniques and elucidating the complex role of biological (microbial) filtration in recirculating aquatic systems.
