Shedd Aquarium, a world-class organization dedicated to aquatic animal care, conservation and education, welcomes Alicia LaVire to the executive team as the Chief Development Officer (CDO) this week. LaVire joins the aquarium amidst its $500 million Centennial Commitment strategic plan – meant to accelerate Shedd’s mission impact and prepare the nonprofit for the next 100 years of service.

“Shedd Aquarium is supported by a community of the most motivated, passionate and generous donors I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting,” said President and CEO Bridget Coughlin, Ph.D. “As we searched for a Chief Development Officer, we looked for someone who understood the importance of trust, relationships and the incredibly powerful connection we all have with nature. I’m thrilled to share that we have found that leader in Alicia.”

In this role, LaVire will lead philanthropic endeavors to build and expand vital funding from individuals, foundations, corporations and more that support all aspects of Shedd’s mission. Additionally, her team oversees Shedd’s membership community, which brings thousands of households closer to nature and the work of the aquarium.

LaVire brings nearly 20 years of experience in the nonprofit sector and a dedication to deepening the impact of mission-driven organizations. For the past eight years, she served in progressive leadership roles with The Morton Arboretum, most recently as Vice President of Marketing and Guest Experience. During a previous tenure at Shedd, she contributed to the early development of the strategic plan and led initiatives that supported both philanthropic and earned revenue goals.

“I am honored to return to Shedd Aquarium, building on its remarkable legacy and inspiring even more people to help shape our shared future together,” said LaVire.

LaVire holds a master’s in business administration from North Central College in Illinois, a bachelor’s in communications from Grand Valley State University in Michigan and an executive education certificate through the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
