About the Achilles tang

A member of the surgeonfish family, this dark-colored tang is easily recognized by the brilliant orange patch at the base of their tail.

Did you know?

  1. The orange patch near the base of the Achilles tang conceals a “switch blade” used for self-defense. See the bump?
  2. During an attack, a tang slashes at enemy fish, which include predators or a rival tang.
  3. An Achilles tang’s defensive spine contains venom, which means double trouble for predators.
