Beluga Calf at Shedd Has a Musical New Name
Chosen by aquarium members, the name nods to the unique vocalizations these whales make and honors his father

Shedd Aquarium is revealing the results of the exclusive member vote to decide on a name for the seven-month-old beluga whale born this past July. After over 1,000 votes were cast, the winning selection is Opus, which is a musical composition or set of compositions usually numbered in the order of its issue. Initially selected by the animal care team, the name honors the calf’s father, Beethoven. Additionally, it references the unique vocalizations that belugas make that have given the whales the nickname ‘canaries of the sea.’
“The chosen name had overwhelming support, our members loved the connection between father and son, found the name to be clever and appreciated the opportunity to give this special whale a name,” said Charlie Jacobsma, director of animal behavior and training at Shedd Aquarium. “Much of what we know about belugas like this calf is discovered at aquariums, so it was a fitting opportunity to engage a group deeply committed to our mission and our work with the whales. The calf is still learning, trying new things, and developing new skills, and we’re still discovering new things through his care and growth that we share with our community – guests, partners and scientists.”
Opus, the beluga calf at the aquarium, is still learning the chirps, clicks, whistles and squeals used to communicate. He regularly interacts with the care staff at Shedd, who remark on his curious nature and willingness to explore, try new things and test his abilities. As Opus continues to explore new spaces, guests and members can potentially identify the youngest whale since he is the smallest in size and darkest in color to the rest of the pod.
“My seven-year-old boy chose the name. This is a great opportunity to get the next generation involved in caring for animals and nature,” shared one member during the voting process.
“It is very nice to feel like my membership has an actionable aspect to it, whether choosing a name or helping the Shedd make advocacy decisions for the betterment of the environment!” another aquarium member added.
This special opportunity will hopefully deepen the connection to belugas and the curiosity of the species. Members support the important work the aquarium does to save species, conserve biodiversity and provide public education that empowers the next generation to protect the blue planet. The naming opportunity was just one of many perks provided as a thank-you for their continued support.
